Rimcorp were engaged by Aurox Resources to provide speciality services  in the development of the projects accommodation facilities for the proposed Balla Balla project.

The Balla Balla magnetite iron ore project is located 140km south of Port Hedland in the Whim Creek district of Western Australia. With a predicted mine life of 25 years and a construction work force of around 1200, Aurox requires suitable project accommodation during this phase, and the subsequent operational phase of the project.

Brief

Construction is planned to commence first quarter of 2009 on the projects workforce accommodation facilities for an expected occupancy of around 1200 residents.

An operational work force of 450 residents will require accommodation on completion of the construction phase. The ability to economically scale back the accommodation facilities to meet this requirement will be considered during the planning phase.

Situation

In the current buoyant marketplace, supply and construction for remote accommodation facilities are in high demand.  Coupled with a tight labour market, the challenges facing the development of a turnkey facility for Aurox are considerable.

Time constraints placed on the completion of the facility presents a strong case for innovative methods for the planning and subsequent selection of suitable suppliers and contractors.

Process

Rimcorp has streamlined the contract award process for the development of the accommodation facilities by developing an enquiry paper which has been designed specifically to efficiently identify the appropriate development and construction participants. This is an innovative alternative to the traditional request for a tender procedure and has been developed to conduct competitive tendering processes for fast track projects.

The response to the enquiry document will be formally assessed by Rimcorp which will identify the appropriate participants.
